The energy of youth shines from every corner of the elementary classrooms as children plan research projects and give form to the classroom community. Here a long division problem; there a map of Africa. Using materials from the concrete to the abstract, children explore a diverse curriculum barely limited by their imagination. The teacher guides, focuses and directs the inquiry as each child develops individually.

In one corner of the room, a small group meets with a teacher to discuss a Great Books story. Across the room a sculpture begins to take form. In the afternoon children gather in small groups to perform music and learn a foreign language.

Children help one another and come to feel that helping is part of living. And so, when asked, the children can explain multiplication — and get the right answer, too!

Together, children and teachers create an environment that supports not only intellectual, but social and emotional development as well. Grounded on a strong academic foundation, they learn to work cooperatively. Together, they plan menus for camping trips, propose and organize field trips, and write out questions for a visiting ornithologist.
