History
The Montessori School (d.b.a. The Montessori Children’s Center) was established in 1972 as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit corporation providing preschool education following the teaching principles established by Dr. Maria Montessori with Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) credentialed staff.
In 1982 the school expanded to include an elementary program serving children ages 6 through 12 at a separate location.
In 1984 the school piloted a summer Children’s Opera Workshop for the community.
In 1985 the school established the Children’s Opera Workshop as an annual event.
In 1987 the school added before and after school child care for enrolled students.
In 1988 the school expanded its summer offerings to include weekly camps available to all children in the greater Kalamazoo area.
In 1988 the school consolidated in its present location.
In 1989 the school established a summer camp program for preschool and elementary children of the community.
In 1990 the school adopted a policy of developing our building and programs as community resources.
In 1992 the school established a tuition assistance program for low income families.
1995 established the elementary students' Pushkin pen pal project.
1996 established a satellite branch of The Montessori School that serves 30 children in Richland, MI
1998 purchased 5.4 acres on Sage Street in Kalamazoo for future development.
1999 hosted Ukrainian teacher as part of an international professional exchange program.
2000 formed coalition of organizations to sponsor community workshops lead by parent education authority Dr. Jane Nelsen.
