History
The Montessori School (d.b.a. The Montessori Children’s Center) was established in 1972 as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit corporation providing preschool education following the teaching principles established by Dr. Maria Montessori with Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) credentialed staff.

  • In 1982 the school expanded to include an elementary program serving children ages 6 through 12 at a separate location.
  • In 1984 the school piloted a summer Children’s Opera Workshop for the community.
  • In 1985 the school established the Children’s Opera Workshop as an annual event.
  • In 1987 the school added before and after school child care for enrolled students.
  • In 1988 the school expanded its summer offerings to include weekly camps available to all children in the greater Kalamazoo area.
  • In 1988 the school consolidated in its present location.
  • In 1989 the school established a summer camp program for preschool and elementary children of the community.
  • In 1990 the school adopted a policy of developing our building and programs as community resources.
  • In 1992 the school established a tuition assistance program for low income families.
  • 1995 established the elementary students' Pushkin pen pal project.
  • 1996 established a satellite branch of The Montessori School that serves 30 children in Richland, MI
  • 1998 purchased 5.4 acres on Sage Street in Kalamazoo for future development.
  • 1999 hosted Ukrainian teacher as part of an international professional exchange program.
  • 2000 formed coalition of organizations to sponsor community workshops lead by parent education authority Dr. Jane Nelsen.

    The school has received support from various granting foundations over the years including:
